Crochet Galore Instagram Dump + Some Beginner Tips

As mentioned in my previous post Crafting (Not Quite) Haul, I will be dedicating a post for my crochet creations. I just got yarns in Familia and Red Heart brands. I actually prefer the texture of colored Familia yarns over Red Heart cause it's less coarse. Red Heart white yarn is soft though. I'm not sure if Red Heart yarn is really like that but in most crochet tutorials I've seen, most are using the Red Heart brand. So I decided that I will purchase one from Amazon. In the Philippines, most yarns are just 35 meters and costs 10 to 14php each ($0.32). You can opt to buy the whole 10 peices which would be 140php ($3.22). I found Red Heart Jumbo Super Savers for about 7$ in Amazon and it's 744 yards! Good for big projects! I've always been not fond of adding a new roll.

Anyway, here's an Instagram dump of the things I've made. WARNING: Selfie-ized photos! Apologizing now for my wide forehead.
  1. Kensington Hat - And yes, I'm wearing it the wrong way (lol). This was my first attempt on creating crocheted hats and I think this got me really hooked when I was able to finish.
  2. Crochet Earrings - Did some experimenting with my surplus of beading materials and was able to come up with these. They're cute right? But I don't wear them cause I'm not really much into accessories.
  3. The Beanie - Should have been something like a Bob Marley hat from the tutorial but I tend to crochet really tight and I think I used the wrong crochet hook. This could pass up to my niece's head but I was able to squeeze mine inside it. And it's not stretchable, ouch!
  4. Crochet collar - Did a bit of sewing here to add the button. The size is for kids too.
  5. Ear warmer Beanie - My cousin's request (and I'm gonna charge her a labor fee, lol). It's really warm and tucks your ear safe from cold winds that are non-existent here in the Philippines.
  6. Slouchy Hat - Now this would pass up as a Bob Marley hat. I did this freestyle though I browsed through a tutorial to start it. It's really big and suited for big-headed people (no pun intended).
Crochet can really use up your time. I usually finish a hat in 6 to 8 hours depending on the difficulty and the level of my laziness. I don't read patterns yet though.

Some (random) beginner tips:
  1. Loosen up that tight grip to your yarn and hook. Tight grips make eveything you make smaller.
  2. Sew your ends for a stronger knot. I don't have a tapestry needle, that works best. I on the other hand use a sewing needle with the biggest eye, it's quite a pain when inserting the yarn but does the same thing with the tapestry needle.
  3. An adult hat needs about 5 to 7 35-meter yarn rolls.
  4. When buying crochet hooks, stick between the 4 to 6 sizes for beginners as projects tend to use most of these sizes (based on browsing YouTube tutorials).
  5. Speaking of YouTube tutorials, there are a loootttt there. Everything you can think off.

With everything I made, I hope I can use one in the future. Lol. But even though I won't, I'll continue to create them, and probably sell them to people going winter overseas. ^^

  2. Try the yarns at Dreams Yarn Shoppe in G5 :) They have imported Red Heart yarns. 370 a roll. Can't remember how many meters, though.
